Last week, members of the ChangeBASE Professional Services Team were busy conducting a partner-hosted proof of concept for a global financial organisation based in the Netherlands. The company is looking to migrate an as yet unknown amount of applications from Windows XP to Windows 7 x86, whilst also getting as many as possible (up to 90%) virtualised using App-V.
The application estate is, as is typically the case, a mixture of batch file, EXE, VBS and MSI/MST, with these last being heavily customised for the client’s environment to the point that they simply won’t install on a machine that isn’t joined to the company domain. Quite a challenge on the application compatibility front.
It took just 30 minutes to upload and test a sample of applications for compatibility with Windows 7 and App-V - manually, this would have taken the best part of a week. Here's what the analysis revealed:
Windows 7 compatibility
Virtualisation: App-V compatibility
The ChangeBASE solution set revealed that the majority of the sampled application did not flag up any compatibility issues. What's more, 95% of the Windows 7 Amber issues that were identified can be automatically remediated, leaving your organisation's costly skilled resource to focus their efforts where they are most needed.
